New Delhi [India], October 8 : The Indian Auto LPG Coalition (IAC) has reached out to the Prime Minister, urging the endorsement of Auto LPG as an environmentally friendly alternative fuel and the establishment of a level playing field.

In a letter, Suyash Gupta, Director General of the IAC, emphasized the significant environmental and economic advantages of adopting Auto LPG compared to traditional fuels.

As a clean-burning fuel, Auto LPG greatly reduces emissions of harmful pollutants, including particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and carbon dioxide, leading to better air quality and a smaller carbon footprint. This positions Auto LPG as a "Net Zero Hero," aligning with India's international environmental commitments and sustainable development goals.

Gupta noted in his letter, "Auto LPG provides substantial environmental benefits, emitting 20 percent less CO2 than petrol and 60 percent less than diesel. It generates almost no particulate matter, a key contributor to air pollution, and has considerably lower nitrogen oxide emissions. In terms of energy security, India imports LPG from various countries, ensuring a stable and secure supply chain, which aids in energy independence."

He also highlighted that Auto LPG is about 40 percent cheaper than petrol, with the conversion cost for a petrol vehicle to Auto LPG being approximately Rs 30,000, which is significantly lower than the costs associated with electric vehicles and even CNG conversions.

The IAC has consistently advocated for cleaner fuel alternatives, actively engaging with policymakers to incorporate Auto LPG into the sustainable development framework. Gupta stressed the necessity of supportive fiscal policies that acknowledge Auto LPG's contribution to achieving India's environmental and economic objectives.

He added, "The tremendous success of the Ujjwala Yojana has enhanced LPG infrastructure availability nationwide, ensuring a stable supply chain for Auto LPG. Globally, Auto LPG has experienced substantial growth, with over 27 million vehicles utilizing it and 25 million tonnes consumed annually."

The IAC is calling for greater inclusion of Auto LPG in the national policy framework for cleaner fuels, alongside electric vehicles (EVs) and CNG.

They propose tax incentives and benefits to motivate Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to produce Auto LPG variants.

Additionally, they recommend reducing the GST rate on Auto LPG from 18 percent to 5 percent to enhance affordability and align it with the GST rate for domestic LPG.
