Washington DC [US], August 31: US Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III reaffirmed the nation's commitment to supporting Ukraine and asserted that Ukraine's resilience will enable it to overcome the aggression and atrocities committed by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Austin made these comments during a meeting with Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov at the Pentagon. He also condemned Russia's recent attacks on Ukraine's vital civilian infrastructure and stated that the US will continue to lead allies and partners in providing crucial support to help Ukraine defend itself.
"Let me be clear, targeting civilians is never acceptable, and Ukraine's resilience will help it overcome Putin's aggression and atrocities," Austin emphasized.
He praised the steadfastness of Ukrainian forces, noting, "They continue to resist the Kremlin's assault and inflict significant losses on Russian invaders. The United States will remain unwavering in its support for a free and sovereign Ukraine."
The meeting between Austin and Umerov took place on August 30, ahead of the upcoming Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. This 24th iteration of the US-led coalition will see nearly 50 allies and partners dedicated to Ukraine's defense.
Austin indicated that the partners will work to address Ukraine's urgent battlefield needs, including air defense capabilities to counter Russian drone and missile attacks.
Meanwhile, Umerov shared a post on X, expressing honor at meeting with Lloyd Austin and describing the meeting as important and constructive. He briefed Austin on the battlefield situation, Ukraine's objectives, and the army's priority needs for weapons, equipment, and training.
Umerov highlighted that enhancing air defense systems to protect infrastructure and civilians is a top priority for Ukraine. "Air defense remains crucial—we need systems and interceptors to safeguard our critical infrastructure, cities, and people. Special thanks to Lloyd Austin for his personal contributions to the Ukraine Defense Contact Group," he stated.
He also noted the focus on developing Ukraine's defense industry, mentioning that hundreds of new businesses have been established over the past two years to rapidly produce high-quality weapons. Cooperation with partners is vital for expanding production and ensuring more effective defense of Ukraine.
